Overview

Are you leading or planning to lead SEL implementation in your school community? Our four-part virtual workshop provides guidance on CASEL’s research-based, field-tested schoolwide SEL framework to create caring, motivating and equitable learning environments that promote social, emotional, and academic growth. Participants will receive timely insights and resources to help promote and sustain SEL during a school year filled with new challenges and uncertainty.

The workshop series is recommended for: PreK-12th grade school administrators, SEL school specialists and coordinators, and district staff who are supporting schoolwide SEL. CASEL encourages you to attend with others on your team to strengthen and sustain your SEL action plan. Past participants reported that attending with a team that included their principal helped them feel more prepared to move forward with their plan.

SESSION 1: Establish a shared understanding of systemic SEL

Participants will engage in an interactive exploration of CASEL’s framework for SEL, the four focus areas for systemic SEL implementation, and the 10 indicators of schoolwide SEL. From this shared understanding, participants will determine where they are starting from and we’ll unpack immediate priority actions.

SESSION 2: Strengthen adult SEL

Participants will explore tangible strategies that support adults in cultivating their own social emotional learning through intentional self-reflection, deep community learning, and modeling SEL across contexts

SESSION 3: Promote SEL for students

Participants will examine strategies for actively engaging students in learning and practicing social and emotional competencies across classrooms and school environments, and in partnership with families and communities. This session will also focus on creating the conditions for student learning, including relationship-building and supportive learning environments.

SESSION 4: Putting it all together: Implementing your plan

Participants will practice strategic planning for SEL implementation, developing a robust plan for engaging the full schoolwide community (staff, families, and students) identifying related data measures and resources for tracking progress alongside implementation towards SEL goals, and modeling the full continuous improvement cycle.

You should plan to attend all four sessions. Each session is two hours, includes suggested actions to complete between sessions, and builds on the previous session in the series.

Objectives

Participants will gain the necessary expertise to create an intentional, collaborative process that engages adults, supports students, and creates equitable learning environments that promote academic, social, and emotional learning. After attending this series, you should be able to:

  • Understand CASEL’s Theory of Action for systemic SEL implementation in service of equity and excellence, including 10 indicators of schoolwide SEL
  • Develop and apply strategies to promote SEL for students and to strengthen adult SEL competencies and capacity
  • Assess current levels of SEL implementation, resources, and needs
  • Draft priorities that will inform an action plan for leveraging SEL to support reuniting, renewing and thriving

Hear from Past Participants

“A wealth of valuable information put into practice for you. You decide what you want to do next and how to roll it out. Great resources!”

“This workshop has been instrumental in being able to introduce SEL to my school in a way that is attainable and connects to all staff levels. Prior to this training, I did not have the language or ability to present the information in a way that connects to the overall goals of the school. I now have hope that we can do this.”

“Any school in any country worldwide planning to implement SEL will benefit.”
